Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellow position position in UCL Division of Infection and Immunity in a research team led by Dr Paola Bonfanti currently based at the Francis Crick Institute.
The post is funded by a Rosetrees Trust grant entitled "Human oesophageal epithelial stem/progenitor cells for tissue regeneration and cancer modelling".
The overall aim of this collaborative research project is to enable a better understanding of the known and novel genetic mechanisms of cancer progression and identify new potential target for personalised therapy. The Bonfanti group has developed culture systems from primary cells to investigate and model ex vivo congenial and acquired diseases including adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus. The project will involve collaboration with a group that has an extensive expertise in large data to predict how abnormal genetic networks in cancer cells drive tumour growth and cancer evolution. Such complementary expertise represents and opportunity to exploit stem cell biology in cancer modelling.
The post-holder will be expected to perform the highest quality research under the direction of the Principal Investigator, and to work effectively with external collaborators involved in the project and other group members.
Dr Bonfanti directs an interdisciplinary team, including molecular biologists, biochemists, immunologists, clinicians and a microsurgeon.

The position is available for one year in the first instance with the possibility of extension up to three years. The position will suit a motivated postdoctoral scientist who wishes to develop their career and pursue opportunities for independent fellowships.
Key requirements
The post-holder should have a PhD (or about to be awarded) in a relevant subject. The successful candidate must have significant experience of working in a research laboratory. Evidence of scientific contribution including publications and presentation at conferences is also essential. Candidates must have excellent oral and written scientific communication skills, commitment to collaboration in research and to taking a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving.
Note: Appointment at grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at the Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £32,217 - £33,958 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated upon the final submission of the PhD thesis.
